James A. Michener (1907–1997) was a highly popular American novelist known for his sweeping historical epics that explore the development of regions and cultures over long periods of time. He was born in New York City and was raised as an orphan, never knowing his biological parents—an experience that influenced his lifelong interest in identity and belonging.
Michener served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and his experiences in the Pacific inspired his first and most famous book, Tales of the South Pacific (1947), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was later adapted into the musical South Pacific. He went on to write numerous bestselling novels, including Hawaii, Centennial, Chesapeake, and Texas, each combining meticulous research with expansive storytelling.
His work is known for its epic scope, often tracing the history of a place from its geological origins through centuries of human development. Michener was also a noted philanthropist, donating much of his wealth to educational and cultural institutions. He remains one of the most widely read American authors of the 20th century.
