J. G. Farrell (1935–1979) was a novelist best known for his darkly comic and historically rich fiction about the British Empire. He was born in Liverpool to an Anglo-Irish family and later studied at the University of Oxford.
Farrell first gained attention with early novels such as A Man from Elsewhere (1963), but his major success came with what is often called his Empire Trilogy: Troubles (1970), The Siege of Krishnapur (1973), and The Singapore Grip (1978). These novels examine the decline of British colonial power through satire, vivid historical detail, and a keen sense of irony. The Siege of Krishnapur won the Booker Prize in 1973.
His writing is noted for blending humor with tragedy, exposing the absurdities and moral contradictions of imperial rule. Farrell’s career was cut short when he died at the age of 44 in a drowning accident in Ireland.
