Tana French is an American-Irish author best known for her bestselling psychological crime novels. She was born in Burlington and spent much of her childhood moving between countries—including Ireland, Italy, Malawi, and the United States—due to her father’s work as an economist.

French later settled in Dublin, where she studied acting at Trinity College Dublin and worked professionally in theatre before turning to writing.

She gained international acclaim with her debut novel, In the Woods (2007), which won several major awards, including the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. The book introduced the loosely connected “Dublin Murder Squad” series, which includes titles such as The Likeness, Faithful Place, and The Trespasser.

Known for her literary style and deep psychological insight, French’s work often explores memory, identity, and the emotional lives of her characters, blending crime fiction with richly atmospheric storytelling. Her novels have been widely praised for elevating the genre beyond traditional detective narratives.

She continues to live and write in Dublin.
